As the 1016s were discontinued different service dials were made because, presumably, the original dial variations were not longer available. There appear to be three “standard” dials that were also used as service dials and one “service only” dial variant.The 1016 handsets come in two distinct types – flat and curved. This refers to the fact that on early 1016’s, meaning the gilt dials and Mark 1 matte dials until the ~1.7-1.8m range, the hour and minute hands are flat. The story of the Explorer began with two earlier bubblebacks, the references 6098 and 6150 (housing the calibre A296), which were utilized by adventurers and mountaineers at the beginning of the 1950’s.
The term “gilt” or “gilt/gloss” refers to dials that were created by a galvanic coating process and appears on the 1016 until ~1967. Galvanization generally refers to a method of coating metals with another substance through a chemical reaction that binds them together.Type 0 (OCC) Serial Range: 516xxx-596xxx. The first 1016 dial is the easiest to pick out. It is the only dial variation that carries over the movement certification from the 6610, “officially certified / chronometer” (often referred to as ‘OCC’).
